A double-seal, non-contact, bidirectional design used in applications where leakage of hazardous pumped media is unacceptable. The seal employs inert gas as a lubricating medium, eliminating the need for buffer fluid and preventing contamination of the process fluid. It provides enhanced protection—even if the outer seal fails, no leakage occurs. Prior to operation, the spiral groove system is tested to ensure lift-off at low speeds, low gas leakage, and non-contact sealing faces.
